About the Exhibition:
Painting Snow: Art of Northern Winter by 20th Century Russian Masters
Drawn from TMORA permanent collection and the renowned collection of TMORA founders Ray Johnson and Susan Johnson, the exhibition of forty paintings highlights the relationship between Russian artists and their most defining season. For centuries, the snowy winter landscape has served as both a challenging physical reality and a spiritual muse.
This exhibition brings together a selection of mid-to-late 20th-century canvases. These artists looked beyond the bitter cold to discover a complex spectrum of color hidden within the ice and snow. Through impressionistic strokes and delicate realist textures, they captured the brilliance of morning sun on fresh powder, the deep blue shadows of twilight forests, and the cozy warmth of village life.
Far from monotonous, these works reveal winter as a living, breathing force of nature. Join us in exploring how these modern masters transformed frozen landscapes into timeless expressions of light, emotion, and national identity.
