This holiday season, The Museum of Russian Art presents The Peak of Winter, an annual exhibition celebrating the artistry and traditions of winter.

Part of The Northern Palette: Winter in Russian Art and Tradition, the exhibition features a rare display of Soviet-era holiday ornaments from the extraordinary collection of Kim Balaschak, gifted to TMORA in its entirety several years ago. Visitors will discover an enchanting array of mid-20th-century spun-cotton decorations and handcrafted Grandfather Frost figurines, depicting the beloved winter gift-giver often considered the Soviet counterpart to Santa Claus.

The exhibition also features a collection of large art dolls dressed in traditional Russian winter attire, generously donated to the Museum by Susan Johnson.

Together, these collections offer a charming glimpse into the craftsmanship, cultural traditions, and festive spirit of winter celebrations.

The Peak of Winter is on view November 27, 2026 – January 24, 2027, as a special holiday installation within The Northern Palette: Winter in Russian Art and Tradition in the Main Gallery.
