NITKA: Seasonal Songs from Ancient Times

November 20, 2026 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The Museum of Russian Art, 5500 Stevens Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55419
$10-15

Discover the songs and traditions of old Russia with Nitka, The Museum of Russian Art’s folk performance ensemble.

For centuries, songs have marked the changing seasons, accompanied village celebrations, and brought communities together. Passed from generation to generation through oral tradition, these melodies have preserved stories, customs, and ways of life reaching far into the past.

Rooted in 19th-century Russian village traditions, with much more ancient origins, these songs offer a fascinating glimpse into the rhythms of rural life, seasonal rituals, and the communal traditions of women.

Through live singing, storytelling, and engaging commentary, Nitka will explore the history and meaning of these remarkable folk traditions, bringing the voices of the past into the present.

This special one-hour program combines musical performance, cultural exploration, and an audience Q&A.

Nitka means “thread” in Russian, reflecting the ensemble’s mission to connect past and present through the preservation of traditional communal culture.
