The Museum of Russian Art presents American Avenues: A Musical Journey from the Russian Empire to America, an evening celebrating the remarkable artists and musical traditions that connected the Russian Empire and the United States.

Featuring works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Jascha Heifetz, the program explores the rich musical connections between the Russian Empire and the United States. Through stories of emigration, diaspora, and cultural exchange, the concert traces the many paths by which artists, ideas, and traditions traveled between two worlds.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Helen Chang Haertzen of the Minnesota Orchestra joins renowned pianist Denis Evstuhin for an unforgettable evening of virtuosity and artistry in TMORA’s Main Gallery.

About the Artists

Helen Chang Haertzen, violin

Helen Chang Haertzen joined the Minnesota Orchestra’s first violin section in 2003 and has appeared frequently in the Orchestra’s chamber music concerts. She has performed as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Esplanade, Junge Philharmonie Erlangen, and Staatsorchester Braunschweig.

Previously associate and principal second violin of Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, Haertzen has also toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, Salzburg Mozarteum, and San Francisco Conservatory and was a prizewinner at Poland’s Karol Lipiński-Wieniawski Competition.

Her acclaimed recording of Bach’s Partitas for Solo Violin was released by Cavalli Records. She also produced and performed on American Avenues, a collection of American classics released by Centaur Records.

Denis Evstuhin, piano

Russian pianist Denis Evstuhin has earned international acclaim for his vibrant artistry, remarkable sound quality, and brilliant virtuosity from audiences and critics alike. He has appeared on stages of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the great Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff Halls in Moscow, the Mariinsky Theater and Philharmonic Halls in St. Petersburg and Warsaw, as well as Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. Evstuhin has appeared as a soloist with the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, and the Sioux City Symphony.

He has also appeared on radio and television in Russia, Europe, and the United States.

Denis holds a B.M. and M.M. from the St. Petersburg Conservatory. While in the United States, he received M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota, where he studied with Professor Alexander Braginsky.
