According to legend, the original icon of The Mother of God of Vladimir was painted by the Apostle Luke and brought to Russia from Byzantium in the 12th century. This icon has become the most beloved image of the Mother of God in Russia and is the foremost symbol of the perseverance of Orthodox Russia throughout its millennial history. Many artists have tried to capture the expression of tender sadness on Mary’s face and thousands of copies have been made of the Vladimir Mother of God. This is one of them.
