Among the surviving masterpieces from the earliest days of color photography, Prokudin-Gorskii’s collection is one of the most impressive. Well acquainted with the achievements of European photographers, Prokudin-Gorskii devoted his career to the advancement of color photography in Russia.
Using a small spring-operated camera of his own design, he took a series of three monochrome pictures, each through a different colored filter. With a special lantern projector, he later reproduced the original picture in full color. Prokudin-Gorskii also developed a glass plate coating that was sensitive to the entire color spectrum and therefore was able to capture color images of exceptional quality.
