The first of Anton Chekhov’s masterpieces, The Seagull tells a story of people longing for love and yearning for happiness that feels as alive, hilarious, and true today as ever.
The first production of the play in 1896 was a spectacular failure and was panned by the critics. It was revived two years later by Konstantin Stanislavskyfor the Moscow Art Theater and hailed as a masterpiece that ushered in a bold new era for Russia as a leader in the world of theater.
