The solo exhibition of Valerian Formozov’s paintings is part of The Museum of Russian Art’s Russian 20th Century Masters series, featuring more than forty paintings by the artist. The exhibition provides a broad view of the artist’s remarkable painting oeuvre. Inspired by the Russian countryside, Formozov’s works reveal a unique artistic vocabulary. His exploration of tonal relationships instills his landscapes and portraits of villagers with a distinctive quality, marvelously capturing the feeling and energy of the Russian countryside. Works on display in the Mezzanine Gallery are drawn from the Raymond and Susan Johnson collection of Russian art, as well as the private collection of Leon Frid and Ellen Garbo, and other private collections.
