A Mountain of Crumbs

Filled with an interweaving of a family’s hidden truth and society’s outright lies, this memoir captures a girl’s 1960s childhood experiences in a nation struggling to control its people and its future. In her own home life, Gorokhova‘s mother seems a personal version of that same controlling mind and overbearing nature. Meanwhile, Gorokhova loved the English language and wanted to learn about the “outside’ world. In her Soviet context both of these could be subversive. The stories create a lively portrait of growing up in a nation crumbling into non-existence.
