The Art of Pysanky with Kathleen Nepsha-Suchok-Eich
Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Kathleen Nepsha-Suchok-Eich, a local Ukrainian-American artist, will be in TMORA Shop on Saturday, November 11, demonstrating the centuries-old tradition of Pysanky egg painting. The process is amazing to watch from the initial design drawing to the hollowing of the eggs, wax application and dipping in dye until colorful patterns are revealed. Kathleen will begin at 11:00 AM and demonstrate until mid afternoon. She will have her daughter and granddaughter working with her making it a special multi-generational event.
The art of creating Ukrainian Pysanky (from the word pysaty – to write) has been handed down from generation to generation. Kathleen learned the art of Pysanky from her father. He made the kistkas out of empty pen cartridges, wired to dowels, while Kathleen’s mother made the dyes out of strips of colored crepe paper. They would soak the drawn eggs for hours to get beautiful colors. “I did my first ‘respectable’ egg at 8 years old and haven’t stopped since,” she says. “When my daughter started doing them, she understood my love of the art because it was very relaxing and creative.
Kathleen’s Pysanky eggs will be available for purchase. No pre-registration is required to attend this demonstration in TMORA Shop. Museum admission applies.
