Staged Reading: The White Plague

Friday, March 21 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$5 – $12

Vladimir Rovinsky, in collaboration with The Museum of Russian Art, presents the English language premiere of a brand-new adaptation of Karel Čapek’s The White Plague. This adaptation was created by Belarusian playwright Andrei Kureichik, who now lives in political exile in the United States, and translated into English by Vladimir Rovinsky.

Set in a dystopian future ruled by the Supreme Imperial Marshal Tretiak, The White Plague explores the clash between unchecked political power and the pursuit of peace. As an incurable pandemic strikes those over fifty, the regime’s carefully controlled world begins to unravel—especially when a cure is discovered, but withheld as a bold act of resistance. Originally written in 1937, Čapek’s work remains startlingly relevant today.

Following the performance, stay for a Q&A with playwright Andrei Kureichik, offering insight into the play’s urgent themes and his experience as a writer in exile.
