The Government Inspector is one of Nikolai Gogol’s most celebrated works. A farcical drama in five acts, the play mercilessly lampoons the corrupt officials of an obscure provincial town portrayed as a microcosm of the Russian state. Despite the initial controversy surrounding the play in 1836, it eventually gained the acclaim it has enjoyed ever since.
