In Between Two Fires: Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin’s Russia (Tim Duggan Books; January 14, 2020), Yaffa paints intimate and complex portraits of some of the country’s most remarkable figures who have built their lives and careers around navigating the omnipresent demands of the state. In this narrative tour of modern-day Russia, Yaffa shows how the Putin system is made possible by the compromises of its citizens, whether in business, politics, or the arts.

About the author: Joshua Yaffa is a correspondent for The New Yorker in Moscow. For his work in Russia, he has been a fellow at the New America foundation, a recipient of the American Academy’s Berlin Prize, and a finalist for the Livingston Award.
