A Conversation with Sergey Mironenko, Head of Research, State Archive of the Russian Federation

Sergei Mironenko is a prominent historian and Head of Research of the State Archive of the Russian Federation. Born in 1951 into the family of a history professor and a pediatrician, Mironenko earned his advanced degrees in Russian history from the Lomonosov Moscow State University. He has taught at several institutions of higher learning, and since 2006 has been the Head of the Department of Russian History of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. Mironenko has authored and edited numerous publications; he hosted television programs about history, such as “Archival Secrets” and “Documents and Fates.”

Between 1992 and 2016, Mironenko was Director of the State Archive of the Russian Federation. His tenure at the State Archive spans an earth-shattering era for Russia in the wake of the Soviet collapse.  As the head of Russia’s major depository of historical documents, he oversaw a  declassification of the classified archives. At the start of his career as the director of the State Archives, approximately 40 percent of the files in the state archive were classified, with a global norm of about 4-5 percent. Mironenko spearheaded the “archival revolution” putting previously inaccessible information into the public sphere.

Sergey Mironenko has actively rallied against the falsification of history, and has used archival documents and research to debunk several Soviet era “myths,” drawing, at times, heavy criticism.
