The Eastern Front of WWII was the largest and bloodiest theater of war in human history. The Second World War, called the Great Patriotic in Russia, caused enormous loss and devastation to the young country, but the indomitable spirit of the people prevailed. Soldiers and sailors, workers and farmers are prominently featured in the foreground of wartime postal miniatures. The set, “Heroes of the Great Patriotic War,” depicts the deeds of heroes of the Soviet Union including the first pilot in the history of aviation to ram his plane into an enemy bomber. Featured on the stamps issued in 1942-43 are anti-tank artillery action, spies in the German rear, nurses carrying the wounded from the battlefield are all featured. The end of World War II saw the Soviet Union emerge as one of the world’s great military powers.
