The Nativity of Jesus Christ

-

Very little is known about Stepan Zaviazoshnikov. Like many icon painters, he inherited his craft from his father and passed the tradition on to his son who was a well-known Yaroslavian restorer and icon painter.  Zaviazoshnikov’s Nativity takes after earlier works on the same subject, but the artist introduces an innovative color scheme into a traditional theme, a typical device of 18th century Yaroslavian art. Orange-pink, light blue and turquoise shades, together with golden halos and silver highlights, create a highly decorative effect that is said to resemble the work of a jeweler.
