The events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ are presented in this icon. They fill in the entire surface of the panel creating a tapestry-like effect. This composition is typical of the Yaroslavian school of icon painting. The icon is not signed, however, on the basis of its style and composition, it is attributed to a Yaroslavl-born Joseph Vladimirov, who distinguished himself as one of the foremost artists employed by the Tsar of Russia in the 17th century. He is known as the author of a major 17th century study of icon painting, “The Treatise on icon painting.”
