Bed

Wooden beds were decorated with bed skirts of remarkable artistry.  The decorative band of a bed skirt was embroidered with the age-old auspicious symbols of a birth-giving goddess and a tree-of-life whose shapes, transmitted from generation to generation, often resembled each other. Usually two bed skirts were used, the embroidered skirt over the  one trimmed with white lace. In some areas of the Russian North, up to seven bed skirts were put on a wedding bed to demonstrate the wealth and industry of the bride.

Piles of pillows were covered with fine Vologda lace, a traditional craft of the region. Embroidered towels were used as wall hangings, both for utilitarian purposes and to show off the needlework prowess of the women living in the house.
