Matryoshka Inside Out: The Art and History of the Russian Nesting Doll
Lecture and Presentation by TMORA Curator Maria Zavialova, Ph.D.
In conjunction with TMORA’s current exhibition Matryoshka: The Russian Nesting Doll, Dr. Zavialova will focus on the little-known history of the Matryoshka and the rich artistic tradition that brought it into being.
Her lecture will be accompanied by a slide presentation including turn of the century photographs, paintings, and designs highlighting the aesthetic of the Nouveau Russian style that nourished the Matryoshka’s success as a preeminent Russian souvenir. Stories behind the nesting dolls on display at TMORA will also be included.
